There are many symptoms of hypothyroidism reported and each and every individual has a different combination of them. Thankfully many of those symptoms can subside with the right medication and lifestyle.
Before I started advocating for my health, I was always tired. I woke up looking forward to a nap or bed time. I had no interest in doing anything that required getting dressed or leaving the house. I constantly yawned. I would doze off if I sat down for too long.
Lord have mercy! Brain fog. What was I saying again?…I could be speaking and forget what I was talking about mid-sentence. Talk about embarrassing! I often wondered if I had early-onset dementia. Seriously. My husband became frustrated with me when I told him I forgot to do whatever I agreed to do. Also, reading to my kids made me feel incompetent and self-conscious. I would mix my words up and not really be able to connect with what I was reading.
I have been “heavy” for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I did have some success losing weight with low-carb dieting. It was very slow and I wasn’t patient enough to keep going. There’s a lot more than just gaining weight going on here, though and it is most certainly not all because of eating too many calories. I have read in various articles that one of biggest factors in weight gain is hormonal imbalance. If our hormones are out of whack, we are not going to successfully lose any weight or feel too great.
I’m being completely transparent in my writing. This is one of the symptoms that brought me to tears. Several years ago, I remember feeling a small bump under my chin. I thought it must have been a pimple. Nope! I gave it a few days and felt there again and stopped in my tracks when I felt a friggin hair! Like a beard-grade single strand of hair. I was in a panic and ran to the bathroom and plucked that sucker immediately. It came back every 3 weeks and just the fact that it existed made me feel disgusting. My doctor ordered tests for PCOS and other hormonal disorders and they all came back negative. She said to blame it on the hypothyroidism.
My body literally seems to have a mind of its own. My period shows up when it wants to. That could be 28 days on the dot. 45 days. It could even be 3 months of not showing up at all. Talk about multiple pregnancy tests and frustration! Not to mention how HEAVY they are.
Thankfully, I have not had to deal with the lost of my hair on top of my head, but my poor eyebrows. When I was younger, I would get my brows threaded all the time. If I didn’t get my eyebrows done, I felt like they had no shape. They were just straight, lifeless, sad eyebrows. I noticed the areas that were routinely threaded growing back less and less. Then I started losing extra hair! Now I actually have to pencil them in to make it look like I have hair in certain spots.
For me, these have mostly been gluten, dairy, and excess sugar. I notice if I eat any of those my stomach is going to let me know that it doesn’t like it. My stomach is a “Karen”. I get all cramped, gassy, and bloated. It’s a completely uncomfortable experience that I like to avoid.
I am nearly always cold, especially my feet. It doesn’t really matter what the temperature is. In fact, I could actually feel hot and still get a chill. Weird. This brings me to my next point…
Yeah, I may have been freezing a few hours ago, but now I’m hot and need my own personal AC. I’m one of those people who can’t sleep without being covered with a blanket. Convenient.
It’s so funny (not) that I want to sleep all day and fantasize about bed time, but when bed time shows up, I’m finally wide awake. Per my doctor’s recommendation, I now take Melatonin most nights.
These are the most prominent symptoms I’ve dealt with consistently for years. Since recently being put on NDT (Natural Dessicated Thyroid Hormone) and changing my lifestyle in a big way, I have noticed these symptoms subsiding…
I no longer need a nap. I can stay up even after the kids go to bed.
The brain fog comes and goes, but I feel more clarity lately.
I’m not the same impatient person who expected to lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks several years ago. I don’t see Paleo as a diet, but more of a lifestyle. Weight loss has been slow and steady. There are some weeks when I lose more weight than others, but I feel better.
As for that pesky hair, it still exists…but it takes much longer than 3 weeks for it to show up.
Periods are taking more time to regulate. It’s still too early for me to make much of an assessment, but definitely not skipping months at a time anymore.
My poor sparse eyebrows…I’m not getting my hopes up too high for them. However, I would eventually like to get microblading done.
As for food sensitivities, if I eat Paleo, I’m good to go. I haven’t felt bloated, cramped, or excessively gassy since I started eating this way. I honestly don’t think it’s worth straying from this way of eating.
That is my list of top noticeable symptoms from hypothyroidism – I’m only one out of millions of people with this disease. I wrote this for awareness. I hope even one person who silently suffers from any of these symptoms can feel more understood and a little less alone.
